My Shoulder Pain Is Gone, The Stabbing Has Stopped, And I Can Finally Lift My Arm Again
I sat in Dr. Morrison's office staring at the MRI images on his screen, watching his mouth move but barely hearing the words.
“...partial thickness tear... other treatments hasn't produced the results we hoped for... I think it's time we discuss surgical options.”
My stomach dropped.
I'd spent eight months doing everything right. Physical therapy twice a week. Cortisone injection that helped for about six weeks before the pain crept back. Ice. Heat. The stretches. The exercises. The $340 ergonomic pillow that was supposed to let me sleep on my side again.
And now this.
“The surgery itself takes less than an hour,” Dr. Morrison continued. “But recovery is significant. Six to eight weeks in a sling. No driving for at least a month. Physical therapy three times a week for four to six months. Most patients return to normal activities somewhere between four and twelve months, depending on the tear.”
Four to twelve months.
I left his office with a surgery scheduler's card in my purse and a follow-up appointment in six weeks.
Six weeks to decide whether to let someone cut into my shoulder.
